Goalkeeper Distribution Training Drills

PGC Director of Coaching Bob Warby shares his drills online for use by all goalkeeper coaches. All training drills are suitable for goalkeepers of every age, ability and level and are only as good as the coach delivering them!

FREE Goalkeeper Coaching Drill GK begins drill by dribbling to the cone and passing to A. A takes a touch and clips the ball into GK's hands, for him to then throw through the small gate adjacent. Work both sides.

Progressions:

A calls either "Hands" or "Feet" and GK must adjust to the serve and distribute with the called method.

A takes a touch then strikes on target after receiving ball from GK

A can either now shoot or dribble in on GK - forcing a One on One situation - GK must react and swiftly distribute before A can defend the gate

FREE Goalkeeper Coaching Drill A begins the drill by playing a "pass back" just wide of the goal, GK reacts to clear through target gate, and A immediately serves a half paced volley to opposite side of the goal. GK must react to save and A instantly repeats the drill. Work both sides.

Progressions:

As well as vary his positions, A varies the type of "backpass" i.e bounced or with pace etc

A calls whether it's a back pass or through ball. GK must assess and decide on the distribution accordingly

Instead of volley, A takes a touch then strikes on target after distribution

FREE Goalkeeper Coaching Drill A fires in volley for GK to catch and return. A then lays a ball off for GK to strike clear into targets placed in opposing half.

Progressions

A varies the position, pace and trajectory of the lay off to simulate errant back passes

A chases down the GK after his back pass, forcing the GK into rushed decision

A peels off towards the half way line after back pass, and dictates to the GK how he wants to receive

....more to follow, keep checking back.
